Design and Controls

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH25 is available in black, silver, red, blue, and violet. It has a metallic surface with hairline-curved finish. Overall, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH25 still looks similar to its predecessor – the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20, but the FH25 now has a redesigned easy-to-hold front-panel trim piece that functions as a hand grip. Besides the chrome colored hand grip and the 28 – 224mm 8x Leica DC Vario-Elmar Lens you will also find an integrated flash and an AF assist lamp on the front side of the camera. On the top side of the FH25 you will find the power switch and the shutter release button which is encircled with the zoom collar. On the far right side of the camera’s top panel, you will find an unusual button, namely the dedicated Easy Zoom (E. ZOOM) button.

Basically, the Easy Zoom button is provided to help photographers utilize the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH25’s powerful zoom with comfort and ease. Pushing the Easy Zoom button while the camera is in Intelligent Auto mode will activate the 10x Intelligent Zoom feature (280mm equivalent), while pushing the button one more time will activate the Extra Optical Zoom function that extends the zoom to 22.5x (504mm equivalent) with maximum file size of 3MP, push the button again to automatically retract the lens to its wide angle position. When the camera is set to REC mode, a single press on the Easy Zoom button will shift the lens instantly to its maximum 8x telephoto zoom position, a second press will activate the extended 18x zoom function, and a third press will automatically retract the lens back to wide angle position.

The button layout on the back side of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH25 is identical with the older Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20, but the buttons are slightly larger now. You will find a record / playback switch, a mode selector button, a four-way control pad surrounding the Menu button, a display button, and a delete / quick menu button. The 2.7 inch LCD screen on which images and movies are both framed and reviewed has only 230,000 dot resolution which is fairly average for today’s market. It includes an eleven-step automatic brightness adjustment which is helpful when shooting outdoors under bright sunlight. Overall, the FH25’s slim and compact body is comfortable to hold. The buttons and switches are well placed, making it easy to operate the camera.
